Review: The Good Sister

The Good Sister The Good Sister by Jess Ryder
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I picked this book up after reading The Ex-Wife by the same author, which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, however, this book just did not have the same kick for me despite having an interesting blurb.

Josie's father has jus passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident. When she visits his house in preparation for cleanup, she is (literally) hit over the head with the discovery of a half sister and her father's secret life. Suddenly, she finds herself questioning everything she knew. And meanwhile, her newfound half sister, Valentina, catapults herself into Josie's life, upending everything in her path.

I didn't really enjoy the multiple Viking references throughout the book, neither did I like some of the characters. Nonetheless, the book did have a good twist at the end.

Review: The Guilty Wife

The Guilty Wife The Guilty Wife by Elle Croft
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It was great to get back to psychological suspense after a couple of YA reads! I came across this one in the supermarket yesterday, and after reading the blurb, resolved to get a copy. I'm happy to say that it did not disappoint!

Bethany, a photographer who's having a steamy affair with her billionaire client, finds her life upended when her lover is found murdered in the streets of London. Terrified of being at the center of a scandal and losing all that she holds dear, Bethany lies to the police and does not reveal the full extent of her relationship with the mogul.

But it soon becomes clear that the killer has it out for her. Her social media accounts are hacked and compromising information posted there. Weird letters are being delivered to her residence. Someone has proof of her affair and is not afraid to use it to destroy her.

As things escalate, Bethany must be very, very careful, because the person she least suspects could be the person trying to destroy her forever.

New Thrillers on my Reading List!

Recently, I binge read all of Brian Freeman's books (PS he writes great thrillers, if you're on the lookout for some!) Anyway, after that I wasn't quite sure what to try next. I usually find myself in a reading rut after exhausting the books by a great author. I attempted some light, fluffy YA novels after,  but I'm happy to be back to thrillers and I cant wait to dive into some of these!

Review: Marathon

Marathon Marathon by Brian Freeman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

While all Mr Freeman's novels are excellent, this one was particularly toughing because it touched on some rather sensitive ares - like Muslim radicalisation and racism.

Downtown Duluth comes alive during the annual marathon, and residents are excited. However, the excitement quickly turns to terror, when towards the end of the race, a bomb is detonated and several people die.

Immediately, residents are up-in-arms against the senseless act, a situation made worse by the presence of anti-Muslim crusader Dawn Basch who is quick to start condemning the attack and blaming the Muslims.

This book is so well written, and highlights the effects of prejudice and the ripple effects it can have. When a young Muslim man finds himself at the center of a witchhunt after being mistakenly identified as the bomber, society will begin to learn how one accusation can change someones life forever.

Review: The Bone House

The Bone House The Bone House by Brian Freeman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I started this book, I was still stuck in Frost Easton's world, and so it took me a little while to get into this one. But I'm glad I persevered. As usual, Mr Freeman doesn't disappoint with a very well written, twisty novel.

Six years ago, Glory nearly died in a fire. Now she's a wild child, and when she meets Mark Bradley on a beach in Florida, she immediately comes on to him. The problem - Mark is a disgraced high school teacher who lost his job because of Glory's elder sister, Tresa.

When Glory is found dead the next morning, Mark is immediately a suspect. In a small town in Wisconsin where outsiders are not welcome, Mark struggles beneath the weight of joblessness and doubting neighbours, all of who believe that Mark is guilty.

But while everyone is quick to believe in Mark's guilt, Det Cab Bolton isn't too sure. Taking a trip to Wisconsin, he quickly starts to unravel clues that point to things not being as cut and dried as everyone would hope.

Review: The Crooked Street

The Crooked Street The Crooked Street by Brian Freeman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

O-M-G!!!

I am still reeling from how damn good this book was. And the cliffhanger that Mr Freeman left us with has me going crazy! Now I can't wait for the next book in this series!!!

But I digress... Abit about the book itself.

A blast from the past
Having fallen out years ago, Frost has not seen his old friend Denny in years. So when Denny stumbles onto his doorstep, dying, with only one word - Lombard - on his lips, Frost is utterly confounded. Who is Lombard really? Why does the whole damn city seem to fear hearing that name? And what's the deal with several mysterious deaths taking place, and a painted red snake appearing near the scene of each death?

Those are just some of the questions that Frost has to grapple with, while trying to dig deeper. And taking on an organization that seems to have eyes and ears everywhere (and I do mean everywhere!) has Frost understandably cautious. In a race against time to unravel the mystery, Frost must ensure that he watches his back and come out alive.

This book was absolutely enthralling. And dammit, that ending... Yes, I'm still ranting about it!

Review: The Voice Inside by Brian Freeman

The Voice Inside The Voice Inside by Brian Freeman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The past few days have been abit busy, so I didn't read this book as fast as I usually do. However, this was one of those books that was best savoured slowly so I'm not complaining!

Frost Easton has had an interesting life. He studied law, started driving a taxi and then ventured into police work when his sister was murdered. However, his past comes calling once again when he's led to evidence that proves that the evidence used to convict his sister's killer was planted. Frost now faces a difficult decision - should he bury the evidence, or should he come forward with it?

Making the ultimate decision, Frost comes forward with the evidence, and a man whom everyone knows is guilty walks free, to continue his killing spree. Frost and the killer are now engaged in a deadly cat and mouse game, and with more women turning up dead, Frost needs to move quickly and gather evidence to reconvict the killer.

MY THOUGHTS
The book flowed so well, and was very well written. I enjoyed reading about Frost's moral dilemma. It was an extremely hard decision for him to make, and I respected him more for it. Personally, I'm not sure that I could have done the same if I found myself in the same situation.
